The Addicting Engagement: Social Media

Have you even been on a device for hours? Well social media has made a huge impact onto this generation.  It is part of a daily life task that most of us do. However, have you stopped to think about how it affects our life? It prevents you from being productive, but also making it easier to connect with eachother. In this explanation writing I will talk about what is social media, how does it affect us, and how can we prevent bad things from happening.

What Is Social Media?
Social media is what most of us go on everyday. It is platforms on our devices such as Tiktok, Youtube, Instagram, etc. People can either post photos, videos, community games, or just use social media to doom scroll without being productive at all. Social media makes people become engaged and interested of what they see on their screen.

Does Social Media Affect Us?
Social media can affect us in many different ways. To start things off, social media could lead to a change in emotions. It opens up cyberbullying and harassment, making life somewhat harder to manage. Based on my research, when you explore other people’s lives based on their posts, it could develop anxiety and depression, due to wondering why your life is not to the standards, based on what you see. Adding on, bright light it could disrupt sleep; it could stimulate the brain with exciting and distressing content.

However, social media could also build relationships, and could open up new opportunities. Connecting with people such as calling and texting could bring you closer to them, such as your friends and family. People could use social media, to introduce new businesses/products, and it could also give good access to information through research.

Preventing Being Cyberbullied and Harrassed:
It is tempting to talk to people you don’t know. For example, in the real life you know not to take candy from a stranger. On social media, “candy” looks like a friendly message asking you for your number or address, but you don’t know what is going on behind the screen. This candy could be leading you to being cyber bullied and harrassed by strangers or someone you are not close to. Secondly, make sure that you are cautious of the texts you send or videos you post. Things such as mean or harsh opinions could lead to non friendly replies.

In conclusion, social media has both good and bad affects. It could make you lazy, cyberbullied, and unproductive. But on the bright side it could open up new relationships, build connections/conversations, and introduce new products and businesses. In addition to that, you have to make sure that your choices dont have bad consequences. Always make sure that you will use social media for good purposes.

Anniversary Weekend Flooding

Have you ever experienced drastic high floods?
In early 2026, the North Island’s East Coast was hit by devastating floods. An amount of people have been affected by the floods that weakened and destroyed houses, roads, and cars, making the rubble unstable to handle the immense pressure. Due to this torrential rain over several days, people had to evacuate their homes. This matter of rain has affected various amount of families. Today in this piece of writing I will be discussing what the floods looked like, how it affected people, and who was responsible.

What Did It Look Like?
Heavy rain has hit the East Coast of the North Island making floods form, which completely changed the structure of their community. From knee deep to stomach deep, the floods had risen; there were washed out cars, fences buried underneath the soggy mud and woody debris. This overall made their community a drastic and unimaginable place. The earthly smell of mud, sewage, rain, and a hint of wood hitting your nose. Precipitation as heavy as this, has made the ground extremely soaked to the point where it couldn’t hold any more water. This disaster was making this place a total mess.

How Did The Floods Affect Their Community?
This matter of change has made a huge impact on people. Due to the floods, individuals had to stay indoors with school cancelled, evacuating to higher grounds. Water was flowing into people’s houses, damaging roads, drowning plants and altogether just making daily life harder to manage. It dangerous to handle because flood water can pick up sewage and toxins, leaving behind hazardous bacteria. Over time, water started rising, people stayed on roofs and cars awaiting help from the emergency services. It was very unfortunate for those who have been affected badly, feeling hopeless due to the fact that some of their hard earned money has come to waste.

Why Are We Responsible For The Floods?
Floods aren’t only caused by the earth’s natural events, but the floods are increased significantly because of our own human doings as well. For example,  placing concrete and making new buildings, can reduce the space for water to seep in the soil. Secondly, slash can block natural waterways and clog storm drains, when you cut down trees and leave the old bits, big storms and heavy rain can wash these piles of wood down hillslides, blocking roads, driveways, block bridges, and  can damage farms. So to keep people and our environment safe, we have to start making better choices towards our lovely earth. Such as putting rubbish where it is supposed to go, being cautious of spare wood from trees, and by limiting the amount of buildings made.

Ultimately, in the East Coast, this terrible event led to major damage towards the whole community. We studied that people have been affected by the floods, which can be increased by our own actions. We have to make a change, because thousands of people have been injured because of the floods every single year. The east coast flood immediately caused dangers such as drowning, and injuries. Floods can also sadly damage roads and the houses, caused by unfortunate weather that impacted a lot of people. For this not to happen often, let’s make better changes to ensure that my community and yours will be safe for everyone.
